Starting in the Lower School, grades JK through five, the program focuses on student awareness of and sensitivity to lines, colors, design, shapes and textures in the environment. Students will work on both two- and three-dimensional art, and experience the major areas of painting, drawing, printmaking, clay modeling, constructing, sculpture, working with fibers, puppetry, mask-making and photographic imagery. We encourage personal expression and the stress the artistic process rather than focus on the quality of finished work.
In the Middle School, the required basic arts course encourages creative and mental growth in a supportive studio art setting. Students continue to work with two- and three-dimensional art in a wide variety of media, including computer applications. The program seeks to foster self-confidence and self-expression while teaching respect for material and tools, and respect for individuality.
As in the Lower and Middle Schools, the program in the Upper School is a basic visual arts education for all students. The course of study encourages creative and mental growth in an atmosphere which permits and nurtures uniqueness.
