As an Episcopal Church School in the Diocese of Virginia, St. Stephen's & St. Agnes creates a Christian environment that welcomes all faiths, in which each student can grow in mind, body, and spirit. A weekly chapel service is held in each division providing an age-appropriate and structured time for students to worship and reflect. Special chapel services are held throughout the year celebrating traditional Episcopal church holidays, such as Christmas and Easter. Lower School
The main theme of Lower School chapel is that God loves you and asks that you demonstrate love for others. Singing is especially lively, using songs that all grade levels can learn. These songs are taken from a variety of sources. Students may participate through the playing of a prelude, acting as crucifer, candle lighter or reader. Students sometimes assist in the homily.
Middle School
Along with traditional bible teachings, Middle School students benefit from a variety of speakers including faculty, who share personal experiences. Students may participate by leading the psalm, reading a lesson or carrying the cross. On occasion, the students will give a dramatic reading, perform a play or offer an anthem.
Upper School
In the Upper School students take part in the service through the leading of the psalm, reading the lesson, playing an anthem or leading the singing. Homilies are delivered by students, faculty, administrators or chaplains, as well as guests from the community. Music comes from either the Episcopal Hymnal, the Episcopal African-American Hymnal or from contemporary Christian songs. In all three divisions, the service follows a modified Service of Morning Prayer as found in the Episcopal Book of Common Prayer.
The Chapel/Performing Arts Center, located at the Upper School, is a symbol of St. Stephen's & St. Agnes School's commitment to our mission to help guide our students in the pursuit of goodness as well as knowledge.
