Mission & Strategic Plan

Mission
Strategic Plan

Along with our Mission, St. Stephen’s & St. Agnes School is guided by our Strategic Plan, which affirms our commitment to the academic, spiritual, artistic, and physical lives of our students. The Plan remains central as we assess our program, develop curriculum, and create opportunities for our students to participate fully and thoughtfully in our complex and interconnected world.

The foundation of our Strategic Plan was created in September 2004 when a group including members of the faculty, staff, administration, Board of Governors, parent body, student body, and alumni met to share thoughts and ideas about how to ensure a strong future for St. Stephen’s & St. Agnes School. Specific goals were outlined in four major areas: the Educational Program, the Faculty, Students and Enrollment, and Finance and Fundraising.

The Strategic Plan is a living document, which is periodically updated to incorporate new ideas, anticipate opportunities, respond to challenges – and to position St. Stephen’s & St. Agnes as an educational leader and a school that will flourish well into the future. Additions have addressed areas of environmental sustainability, multiculturalism, and 21st century skills. The Board’s Strategic Planning Committee constantly monitors the Plan’s progress and delves deeply into several areas of it each year. There are specific strategies developed for each goal. This process ensures that the Strategic Plan remains current and guides the thoughtful, creative, dynamic work that is happening at our school.

Broad Goals of Our Strategic Plan
GOAL I:  Educational Program
St. Stephen’s & St. Agnes School will strengthen, refresh, and clarify a rigorous and cohesive JK-12 educational program. We will solidify and enhance our integrated, college-preparatory curriculum. We will illuminate our commitment to the values of an Episcopal Church School, while honoring goodness and the unique value of each of our members as a child of God. We will provide the tools and opportunities needed for each of our boys and girls, of every age and skill level, to learn and achieve.

GOAL II:  Faculty
St. Stephen’s & St. Agnes School will attract, support, and retain a distinctive and diverse faculty of the highest caliber. Our faculty will demonstrate a passion for teaching, encourage a love of learning, seek to care for and identify the individual strengths and gifts of each student, and thrive in a school environment that recognizes, empowers, and appreciates skilled and talented educators.

GOAL III:  Students and Enrollment
St. Stephen’s & St. Agnes School will maintain and enhance its commitment and ability to enroll a talented, diverse, and vibrant student body, from every socioeconomic background and from all parts of the DC/Northern Virginia/Maryland metropolitan area. We will develop the financial resources necessary to enable us to restrain tuition growth and offer meaningful tuition assistance to students with need.

GOAL IV:  Finance and Fundraising
St. Stephen’s & St. Agnes School will substantially increase the size of its endowment, creating an additional, perpetual source of wisely managed funds that can supplement tuition revenue. We will pursue financial disciplines and intensify expense management so that, along with income from a larger endowment, we will strengthen the school’s overall fiscal health. We will pursue a robust fundraising program to enliven the school’s philanthropic culture, to activate its capacity to garner gift support each year for operations, and to ensure success in raising significant funds for endowment and other school needs that emerge.
