Seventh and eighth grade students began preparing for their final exams last week. Students will take their exams Monday June 1 through Friday June 5. Please note these days are early dismissals for all seventh and eighth grade students. Students will be released at 12:00 each day, except for Thursday, June 4 when the eighth grade students will be dismissed at 1:00 following rehearsal for Recognition Day. Awards Day
Monday, June 8 is our Middle School Awards Day. Families of students who are receiving an award will be notified ahead of time. All students should arrive on campus by 8:00 am in Chapel Dress.
After the Awards Ceremony, students will spend time in each of their classes before concluding the morning with a closing chapel.

SRCA Meeting Re: Traffic Changes to Duke Street
Many of our SSSAS families have indicated they are looking for more information about the proposed increases in building density and traffic changes for Duke Street. On Wednesday, June 10, at 7:30 p.m., the Seminary Ridge Civic Association (SRCA) is hosting a neighborhood meeting at the SSSAS Upper School to discuss these topics. More information, including how to join the meeting remotely, is available in this flyer from the SCRA.

We are delighted to announce the upcoming Middle School Saints Acting Guild production of Shrek The Musical KIDS!
Based on the beloved DreamWorks film and Broadway musical, Shrek KIDS is a "big bright beautiful world" where everyone’s favorite ogre leads a cast of fairytale misfits on a hilarious and heartwarming adventure. When Shrek’s swamp is overrun by outcasts banished by Lord Farquaad, he sets off with a wisecracking donkey to rescue Princess Fiona—and along the way, discovers friendship, love, and the true meaning of acceptance.
Filled with humor, unforgettable characters, and a powerful message, Shrek The Musical KIDS is a fun and uplifting show for the whole family.
This performance is on Friday, May 22 at 5PM in the Chapel/Performing Arts Center at the Upper School. Seating will be first-come, first-served, and free tickets can be reserved through this Google Form!

STRATEGIC PLAN PARENT SURVEY
In November of 2024, SSSAS parents completed a survey that was instrumental in developing our Strategic Plan. In partnership with MehtaCognition, we have developed this follow-up survey which will provide an up-to-date snapshot of parent perceptions about the mission of the school, its programs, and your child’s experience. This new information will enable us to learn if/how feelings and perceptions have changed and will help us to continue to improve and thrive as an institution. This survey is being administered by MehtaCognition to ensure security, anonymity, and confidentiality of the information that is shared.
We are asking that all SSSAS families access and complete this brief 15 minute survey by Tuesday, May 19. Please note that the survey should only be completed once per family. (There are opportunities within the survey to fill it out regarding multiple children.) If you have any questions, please feel free to reach out to me at jdesautels@sssas.org. Middle School Performing Arts Boosters’ (PAB) Pizza Sales
Everyone’s Favorite Lunch Day is Back! Mark your calendars now - pizza sales will take place during lunch on the following Friday: May 15. For $7, your student gets: two slices of pizza, a drink and two cookies (half-price pizza is for sale after all students have gone through the line). You now have the option to pre-purchase your student’s pizza lunch. Please note that cash will still be accepted the day of and half-price pizza will be cash only. Deadline for pre-purchase is the night before at 7:00 p.m.

Seventh Grade Film Festival
Please join us for the Seventh Grade Film Festival on Tuesday, May 19 from 6:30-7:30 p.m. Families will start off with a brief introduction from our history teachers in the Middle School Gym, and then will break into various classrooms around the building to view the films in small groups. Adults will have the opportunity to ask the students a few questions after each film. The students are looking forward to sharing their Changemaker documentaries with you!
Eighth Grade Seminar Capstone Presentations
The eighth grade Seminar Capstone Projects provides students with an opportunity to explore the connection between a passion or interest and the challenges facing our world today. Students look forward to seeing you at our first Capstone Project Showcase on Thursday, May 21, at 6:00 p.m. on the Middle School campus. They are excited to share their process, product, reflections, and takeaways with the Saints' community. We look forward to celebrating the ideas and actions of our students with your family.

Instructure (Canvas) Security Incident Information for Families
We want to make our families aware of a recently reported cybersecurity incident involving Instructure, the company that provides the Canvas learning management system.
Canvas is not an official platform used by St. Stephen’s and St. Agnes School. However, some members of our community may use Canvas through outside organizations, such as external academic programs, professional groups, or extracurricular activities.
Note that this notice is NOT related to Canva, the graphic design platform that our school uses. Canva is a separate company and is not part of this incident.
Our School’s Status
- We have no evidence that school systems or data were affected
- We have identified limited external use of Canvas within our community
- This use appears to be independent of school systems
What happened
- Instructure reported a cybersecurity incident impacting parts of its platform
- The issue involves unauthorized access to some Canvas accounts and/or data
- The full scope is still under investigation, but has already impacted millions of students
What information may be involved
Based on current reporting, impacted data may include:
- Names
- Email addresses
- User IDs
- Course content or messages
There are no reliable reports of financial data exposure, but this depends on how the accounts were used.
What families should do
If you or your student uses Canvas through an outside organization:
- Be cautious of unexpected emails related to those accounts
- Avoid reusing school passwords on external sites
- Update passwords for those accounts as a precaution
- Encourage students to report anything suspicious to the institution associated with their Canvas account

The Jr. Tri-M Music Honor Society is sponsoring a Spring Swing Dance with live music for SSSAS MS students from 5:00-7:00 p.m. at the MS. Tickets to attend are $5 and can be purchased until Monday, May 11, 2026. The Swing Dance is open to all 6th, 7th and 8th grade students, and the evening begins with a 20 minute swing dance lesson for those new swing dancers! There will be great live music, some easy steps to learn, and delicious snacks. Light refreshments included in ticket price. Tri-M will donate all proceeds to our sister school, St. Paul’s School and Parish, in Montrouis, Haiti to support their music program.

Reimagined Middle School Arts Day
We are excited to announce a reimagined Middle School Arts Day — a full day dedicated to individual and ensemble enrichment, growth, and celebration of our performing arts students.
Taking place on Wednesday, May 13 during our regularly scheduled academic day, Arts Day will feature instrument sectionals, instrumental masterclasses, chorus sectionals, choral masterclasses, and full ensemble rehearsals. Drama students will also have the opportunity to participate in dedicated masterclasses and workshops, while sixth, seventh, and eighth grade classes will each present their own class productions. Students across all disciplines will have the unique opportunity to work alongside guest instrumentalists, conductors, and artists — bringing an extraordinary level of inspiration and mentorship directly to our school.
The day will also include a cookout lunch provided by our dining service and conclude with a selection of dessert food trucks — because every great performance deserves a great finale.

We are looking for a few folks to help sell snacks and drinks at Steve & Aggies for two upcoming events. Middle School track meets are some of the most popular events for concessions!

On behalf of the Saints Athletics Club, we want to thank everyone who has volunteered at Steve & Aggies this past school year. We have one final ask: We are looking for volunteers to serve on the Steve and Aggies Committee for the 2026-2027 school year. This is a great way to get involved in the athletic community at school, to support our students and coaches, and to connect with other families. Positions are available for Co-Chair as well as volunteers overseeing specific roles on the Committee.
No prior experience with Steve and Aggies is required—We will provide training as well as resources to help guide you.

7th Grade Film Festival
Please join us for the Seventh Grade Film Festival on Tuesday, May 19 from 6:30-7:30 p.m. Families will start off with a brief introduction from our history teachers in the Middle School Gym, and then will break into various classrooms around the building to view the films in small groups. Adults will have the opportunity to ask the students a few questions after each film. The students are looking forward to sharing their Changemaker documentaries with you!
Volunteers Needed to Serve on Steve & Aggies Committee
On behalf of the Saints Athletics Club, we want to thank everyone who has volunteered at Steve & Aggies this past school year. We have one final ask: We are looking for volunteers to serve on the Steve and Aggies Committee for the 2026-2027 school year. This is a great way to get involved in the athletic community at school, to support our students and coaches, and to connect with other families. Positions are available for Co-Chair as well as volunteers overseeing specific roles on the Committee.
No prior experience with Steve and Aggies is required—We will provide training as well as resources to help guide you.

The Jr. Tri-M Music Honor Society is sponsoring a Spring Swing Dance with live music for SSSAS MS students from 5:00-7:00 p.m. at the MS. Tickets to attend are $5 and can be purchased until Monday, May 11, 2026. The Swing Dance is open to all 6th, 7th and 8th grade students, and the evening begins with a 20 minute swing dance lesson for those new swing dancers! There will be great live music, some easy steps to learn, and delicious snacks. Light refreshments included in ticket price. Tri-M will donate all proceeds to our sister school, St. Paul’s School and Parish, in Montrouis, Haiti to support their music program.

EARTH WEEK IS COMING!

On Friday, April 17, we will kick-off the Earth Week celebrations with an assembly from local artist and activist, Ursula Seckel. She is known for her multi-media artwork using recyclable and reclaimed materials. Ursula will also lead a workshop with two eighth grade art classes.

On Tuesday, April 21, the middle school will hold our annual outdoor chapel service in Fort Ward Park. All middle school students are invited to wear dress down attire representing their favorite season. We will also provide a cookout-style lunch for all students, regardless of whether they are enrolled in the lunch program.

On Wednesday, April 22 (EARTH DAY!), sixth and seventh grade students are invited to celebrate Earth's land and waters by wearing blue and green dress-down attire. NOTE: Eighth graders will attend an English field trip off-campus and should wear normal school attire (blue and green is encouraged).

Sustainability-themed activities will take place throughout the week (April 20 - 24) on each campus. Additionally, we encourage families to view the World Wildlife Foundation's "Give an Hour for Earth" site for ideas on how to engage with nature at home. Log your activity in their "National Hour Count" by April 30th to join the movement!

Dr. Devorah Heitner Visit
This week, our students heard from Dr. Devorah Heitner about building healthy, responsible habits with technology. She shared practical, age-appropriate guidance to help students navigate texting, social media, and gaming with greater awareness and care.
Some key takeaways included:

Approach friendships with perspective (the “80/20 rule”) and avoid escalating conflicts, communicate directly rather than through group texts.
-
Be thoughtful and respectful in digital communication, don’t screenshot or share messages without permission unless safety is a concern.
-
Remember there is a real person on the other side of every message, post, or comment, aim to “do no harm.”
-
Think carefully before posting or liking content, and always ask permission before sharing photos or videos of others.
-
Balance screen time with real-life activities, take breaks (especially during gaming), and pay attention to your body’s signals. If you learn something useful and positive online (like on YouTube), try doing it in real life!
-
Protect privacy, including not widely sharing location, and seek help immediately in situations involving unsafe or inappropriate content.

Prioritize sleep, keeping devices out of the bedroom can make a big difference in well-being.
Students were reminded: you should run your tech, it should not run you. When in doubt, it’s best not to share.
We encourage you to continue these conversations at home and reinforce these habits together.

Best known for the Nyxia triad, he will be discussing his upcoming release, the thrilling fantasy adventure, Devious Prey. Sixth Grade Global Religions Field Trip
On Tuesday, March 17, the sixth grade will embark on our annual Global Religions Field Trip, exploring religious diversity within our local community. Students will visit Agudas Achim Synagogue, Washington National Cathedral, and Sikh Gurdwara DC. These visits are educational and observational in nature and are not worship-focused.
This field trip supports our school’s mission by helping students grow in religious literacy, empathy, and respect for the dignity of every person as they encounter diverse faith traditions.
Students will depart after chapel and return to the Middle School at approximately 2:00 p.m. Students should bring a bagged lunch and a water bottle.
To ensure both comfort and respect for the communities we are visiting, students should wear community dress with the following additional considerations:

Clothing should allow for sitting on the floor.

Shoes should be easy to remove.

Modesty is expected (long pants or skirts and long sleeves are preferred).
At the gurdwara, all students will be required to cover their heads. If possible, girls should bring a scarf. The gurdwara will provide bandanas for boys and anyone else who needs a head covering.

Set in 1984, the classic film-turned-stage musical follows Ren as his life turns upside down with a move from lively Chicago to small-town Bomont, where dancing has been outlawed. Tensions between the town's teenagers and adults mount as they struggle with grief and forgiveness, control and freedom, loss and love. Which will win out?

Visit with Dr. Zucker
We are excited to welcome Bonnie Zucker, PsyD., to our school on Monday, March 9. Dr. Zucker is a local therapist and author who specializes in supporting children and teens through anxiety, friendships, and the social-emotional challenges of adolescence.
During her visit, Dr. Zucker will meet with sixth, seventh, and eighth grade students to explore social power, helping them better understand peer relationships, empathy, influence, and responsible decision-making. Her work aligns closely with our middle school social-emotional learning, including Advisory and the Saints Advisory Program (SAP).
Dr. Zucker will also offer a parent session for families of middle school students on March 9 at 7:00 p.m. in the Babyak Library, providing practical strategies to support confidence, resilience, and healthy relationships at home. Families are encouraged to RSVP.
Sixth Grade Global Religions Field Trip
On Tuesday, March 17, the sixth grade will embark on our annual Global Religions Field Trip, exploring religious diversity within our local community. Students will visit Agudas Achim Synagogue, Washington National Cathedral, and Sikh Gurdwara DC. These visits are educational and observational in nature and are not worship-focused.
This field trip supports our school’s mission by helping students grow in religious literacy, empathy, and respect for the dignity of every person as they encounter diverse faith traditions.
Students will depart after chapel and return to the Middle School at approximately 2:00 p.m. Students should bring a bagged lunch and a water bottle.
To ensure both comfort and respect for the communities we are visiting, students should wear community dress with the following additional considerations:

Clothing should allow for sitting on the floor.

Shoes should be easy to remove.

Modesty is expected (long pants or skirts and long sleeves are preferred).
At the gurdwara, all students will be required to cover their heads. If possible, girls should bring a scarf. The gurdwara will provide bandanas for boys and anyone else who needs a head covering.
Saints Giving Day Success
Our amazing Saints community showed up with incredible generosity and enthusiasm for our 6th annual Saints Giving Day last Wednesday. 427 Saints came together to contribute over $409,000! Our Upper School students were busy giving back, too—writing more than 250 thank-you postcards to our alumni. A special shout-out to our Freshmen, who won a dress-down day for writing the most notes!

For $7, your student gets: two slices of pizza, a drink and two cookies (half-price pizza is for sale after all students have gone through the line). Middle School Performing Arts Boosters’ (PAB) Pizza Sales
Everyone’s Favorite Lunch Day is Back! Mark your calendars now - pizza sales will take place during lunch on the following Fridays: February 27, April 17, and May 15. For $7, your student gets: two slices of pizza, a drink and two cookies (half-price pizza is for sale after all students have gone through the line). You now have the option to pre-purchase your student’s pizza lunch. Please note that cash will still be accepted the day of and half-price pizza will be cash only. Deadline for pre-purchase is the night before at 7:00 p.m.

School Store Pop-Up
The School Store is hosting a Pop-Up on the Middle School Campus on Tuesday, March 3. The store will be open from 11:50 a.m.-12:50 p.m. Middle School students will be able to shop independently during lunch and recess. All students have charging capabilities. The school recommends that families talk with their child about their expectations regarding the use of a charge account at the school store. Students are always welcome to browse.

One of the most fun nights of the year, Saints Got Talent is a showcase for our student (and sometimes faculty) performers. The evening begins on Tuesday, February 10 at 5:00 p.m. with a pizza party in the Upper School Dining Commons, before everyone moves to CPAC for the show at 6:00 p.m. Performers auditioned for the show in front of the Performing Arts Department ahead of time and worked to polish their performances.

Seventh Grade Fieldwork Plans for Monday, Nov. 24
On Monday, Nov. 24, seventh grade will participate in service-oriented fieldwork with various community partner organizations. The day begins with G Period, and then all students will travel to a community organization to participate in on-site fieldwork. All groups will be back in time for the athletics period. To facilitate the groupings, if you know that your child will be absent on the 24th, please let us know in advance. Reach out to Katherine Bryant or Kelley Gorman with any questions or other information.
All seventh grade students should bring/wear:
- academic supplies for G period
- regular items for athletics
- a packed lunch, snack (for a.m. bus ride), & and reusable water bottle
- weather-appropriate DRESS DOWN attire (long pants & long sleeves, plus fully-enclosed shoes that can get a bit dirty)
Eighth Grade Field Trip Plans for Monday, November 24
On Monday, Nov. 24, the eighth grade will be traveling to D.C. for a History field trip. We will be doing a walking tour of the monuments in DC, with the goal of connecting those monuments to the history that we have already learned this year.
Students will need the following items for the day:
- Lunch in a drawstring bag
- Athletic shoes that they can walk around in
- A writing utensil
- Their supplies for athletics (they will go to sports after the field trip)
- Their supplies for G Period (we will have G Period before we leave for the field trip)

FINAL CALL for November Middle School Chapel Collection for Mother of Light Center Food Pantry: Through November 25, the Middle School will collect food for the Mother of Light Center (a community partner for our 8th grade religion and seminar classes). Food items needed: canned tuna or chicken; rice and dry black or red beans (1 lb. bags). Items can be dropped off in bins in the MS front foyer. Looking ahead, our December drive will be a holiday book drive benefiting Inspire Lit.
Lost and Found Clean Out
The Middle school lost and found will be cleaned out during the Thanksgiving break. Please encourage your student to have a look for any missing items. There are lots of sweatshirts, jackets, coats, water bottles, etc. All items will be donated beginning on Tuesday afternoon.
Saints Athletic Club
Please support the Saints Athletics Club by volunteering to sell concessions at Steve & Aggies this winter season. Steve & Aggies will be operating out of the café in the gym lobby during home boys’ and girls’ basketball games and wrestling meets. Chaplains Elizabeth Rees (US) and Sarah Moses (MS) are hosting discussion groups for parents around raising teenagers in faith. Each gathering will combine watching short sections of Kate Bowler’s podcast “Everything Happens” with conversation around scripture and our own parenting experiences. The chaplains will offer two groups each month, one in person and one by zoom. The in-person group will take place one Friday a month at the Upper School at 8:30 am, and the zoom group will meet one Wednesday a month during lunch at 11:30 am. Parents are welcome to attend as available. If you haven’t already signed up and would like to be included in email reminders before the group meetings, please let Rev. Rees know.

SSSAS is thrilled to be hosting a FIRST Tech Challenge (FTC) event at St. Stephen's and St. Agnes Upper School Campus on January 17 and 18. We are reaching out to help recruit volunteers for this exciting day of robotics, teamwork, and STEM learning.We are reaching out in hopes that you can help by:
- Volunteering on one or both days — This link will allow you to volunteer for January 17 and this link will work for January 18 (you'll need to sign up for each day separately). Volunteers will need to complete a few quick online steps, including training and Youth Protection screening.
- Recruiting other volunteers — Please share this opportunity with friends, family, or colleagues.

We’ll need over 150 volunteers across both days. No experience or technology background is required, and volunteers can choose the role that best fits their interests/skills. Students (ages 13 and over) are welcome to volunteer as well, and this will count for volunteer hours. Our events rely on dedicated volunteers to make them possible — from judging and field setup to registration and team support. Whether someone can give a few hours or the full day, their time directly helps local students grow their skills in problem-solving, innovation, and collaboration.

Seventh Grade Fieldwork Plans for Monday, Nov. 24
On Monday, Nov. 24, seventh grade will participate in service-oriented fieldwork with various community partner organizations. The day begins with G Period, and then all students will travel to a community organization to participate in on-site fieldwork. All groups will be back in time for the athletics period. To facilitate the groupings, if you know that your child will be absent on the 24th, please let us know in advance. Reach out to Katherine Bryant or Kelley Gorman with any questions or other information.
All seventh grade students should bring/wear:
- academic supplies for G period
- regular items for athletics
- a packed lunch, snack (for a.m. bus ride), & and reusable water bottle

Our November 11 Veterans Day Chapel will celebrate veterans connected to our Saints community. Pumpkins are Compostable!
Each year, an estimated 1.3 billion pounds of pumpkins end up in landfills. While rotting in the enclosed space, they emit methane - a greenhouse gas significantly more effective at trapping heat than carbon dioxide. We encourage you to dispose of pumpkins in an earth-friendly way! The "Pumpkins for the People" organization has collection sites at several nearby Farmers Markets (Alexandria West End, Old Town, etc. - search your zip code in the link provided). Per their guidelines: Please ensure all candles, wax and other non-compostable materials are removed, and then cut those pumpkins or jack-o-lanterns into pieces and bring them to market in a compostable bag. The smaller the pieces, the quicker the pumpkins will break down! Reach out to the campus Sustainability Coordinators (LS: Leslie Williams, MS: Kelley Gorman, US: Julie Krane) with any questions.
MIddle School Diversity Conference
We are excited to announce that we will be offering our 11th Middle School Diversity Conference (MSDC) at the SSSAS Middle School on Friday, November 14, 2025 from 9-2 PM. The MSDC is an opportunity to bring together MS students from across the DMV to engage in conversations and activities with their peers around topics of diversity, equity, inclusion and belonging.
Our theme this year, Stitching Together a Stronger Community: Tied by Many Threads, explores ways in which our identities are influenced by our communities and our communities by the many ways we identify. We are thrilled that Amber Robles-Gordon, accomplished mixed media visual artist will start off the morning with a keynote address sharing how her art is a reflection of her community, therefore a reflection of herself.
As in the past, our Upper School student leaders will be running a series of active and engaging workshops where participants will create their own identity reflecting art. Each year we reserve a number of spots for our own SSSAS MS students. This year, we are limiting SSSAS to 20 students on a first come, first serve basis. Please note: This is a teacher workday at the MS, and there is no school in session on this day. If your student is interested in participating in the conference, they should sign up with Mrs. Cooper before November 3, 2025. The conference is free of charge for SSSAS MS students, and a t-shirt and lunch are provided. If you have any questions, please reach out to Rebecca Cooper, Religion Department Chair.
Our Upper School Robotics team is looking for an assistant coach – could that be you?

This is a paid position that involves leading student team members in the design, construction, and programming of robots for competition. The coach plays an integral role in fostering a positive and inclusive team culture while emphasizing critical thinking and creativity. Model UN Conference for Eighth Graders
Eighth grade students have the opportunity to be part of a St. Stephen’s and St. Agnes School delegation to the Middle School Model United Nations conference at William and Mary from Friday, February 27- Sunday, March 1.
Model UN conferences involve students acting as diplomats for a country that has been assigned to them in a simulation of the United Nations. They learn to work in committees, to write position papers, and to practice their debate and speaking skills with other students from middle schools across the region. If you’d like more information, take a look at this quick video on what a Model UN conference is about or the conference’s own website here.
SSSAS students will need to commit to doing about 4 hours of work outside of school time and seven lunch time meetings in order to attend the conference.

Dogs on Campus
To ensure the safety and comfort of all of our community members, dogs and other pets (with the exception of service animals) are not permitted on any SSSAS campus during school hours from 8:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m., Monday through Friday. Families may be allowed to walk their dogs on campus during drop-off and pick-up times, when attending explicitly pet-friendly school events (such as the annual Blessing of the Animals), and when attending athletic competitions. For everyone’s safety, all dogs must be leashed, under the control of a responsible handler at all times, and compliant with all local licensing and vaccination requirements. Owners are expected to maintain full control of their dogs and to be respectful of others’ space. Owners may not allow their dogs on turf fields and must also always clean up after their dog. Please note that failure to properly control or clean up after a dog may result in that dog being prohibited from campus. We appreciate your partnership in helping us maintain a safe and welcoming environment for our community.

Middle School Chapel Notes
During our November 4 All Saints Chapel we will remember the names of loved ones who have passed away. If your family would like a deceased friend or family member’s name read aloud during chapel, please email the name to Rev. Moses, Middle School Chaplain by November 3.
Our November 11 Veterans Day Chapel will celebrate veterans connected to our Saints community. If you have a veteran, retired service member, or active-duty service member in your family, please send name, rank, and photo to Rev. Moses, by November 7 for our tribute video. And if you sent a photo in the past two years, just confirm that we have the correct info for your family member!
November Middle School Chapel Collection for Mother of Light Center Food Pantry
During the month of November the middle school will collect food for the food pantry at Mother of Light Center (a community partner for our 8th grade religion and seminar classes). Food items needed: canned tuna or chicken; rice and dry black or red beans (1 lb. bags). Items can be dropped off in bins in the MS front foyer!
Raising Teenagers in Faith
Chaplains Elizabeth Rees (US) and Sarah Moses (MS) are hosting discussion groups for parents around raising teenagers in faith. Each gathering will combine watching short sections of Kate Bowler’s podcast “Everything Happens” with conversation around scripture and our own parenting experiences. The chaplains will offer two groups each month, one in person and one by zoom. The in-person group will take place one Friday a month at the Upper School at 8:30 am, and the zoom group will meet one Wednesday a month during lunch at 11:30 am. Parents are welcome to attend as available. If you haven’t already signed up and would like to be included in email reminders before the group meetings, please let Rev. Rees know.

Middle School Performing Arts Boosters’ (PAB) Pizza Sales

Everyone’s Favorite Lunch Day is Back! Mark your calendars now - pizza sales will take place during lunch on the following Fridays: November 21, December 12, January 23, February 27, April 17, and May 15. For $7, your student gets: two slices of pizza, a drink and two cookies (half-price pizza is for sale after all students have gone through the line). You now have the option to pre-purchase your student’s pizza lunch. Please note that cash will still be accepted the day of and half-price pizza will be cash only. Deadline for pre-purchase is the night before at 7:00 p.m.

Pumpkins are Compostable!
Each year, an estimated 1.3 billion pounds of pumpkins end up in landfills. While rotting in the enclosed space, they emit methane - a greenhouse gas significantly more effective at trapping heat than carbon dioxide. We encourage you to dispose of pumpkins in an earth-friendly way! The "Pumpkins for the People" organization has collection sites at several nearby Farmers Markets (Alexandria West End, Old Town, etc. - search your zip code in the link provided). Per their guidelines: Please ensure all candles, wax and other non-compostable materials are removed, and then cut those pumpkins or jack-o-lanterns into pieces and bring them to market in a compostable bag. The smaller the pieces, the quicker the pumpkins will break down! Reach out to the campus Sustainability Coordinators (LS: Leslie Williams, MS: Kelley Gorman, US: Julie Krane) with any questions.
MIddle School Diversity Conference
We are excited to announce that we will be offering our 11th Middle School Diversity Conference (MSDC) at the SSSAS Middle School on Friday, November 14, 2025 from 9-2 PM. The MSDC is an opportunity to bring together MS students from across the DMV to engage in conversations and activities with their peers around topics of diversity, equity, inclusion and belonging.
Our theme this year, Stitching Together a Stronger Community: Tied by Many Threads, explores ways in which our identities are influenced by our communities and our communities by the many ways we identify. We are thrilled that Amber Robles-Gordon, accomplished mixed media visual artist will start off the morning with a keynote address sharing how her art is a reflection of her community, therefore a reflection of herself.
As in the past, our Upper School student leaders will be running a series of active and engaging workshops where participants will create their own identity reflecting art. Each year we reserve a number of spots for our own SSSAS MS students. This year, we are limiting SSSAS to 20 students on a first come, first serve basis. Please note: This is a teacher workday at the MS, and there is no school in session on this day. If your student is interested in participating in the conference, they should sign up with Mrs. Cooper before November 3, 2025. The conference is free of charge for SSSAS MS students, and a t-shirt and lunch are provided. If you have any questions, please reach out to Rebecca Cooper, Religion Department Chair.
Our Upper School Robotics team is looking for an assistant coach – could that be you?
We have an enthusiastic team of students who are excited for the year ahead. This is a paid position that involves leading student team members in the design, construction, and programming of robots for competition. The coach plays an integral role in fostering a positive and inclusive team culture while emphasizing critical thinking and creativity. Stage One Theater Production
This year our Upper School theatre troupe, Stage One, proudly presents Shakespeare’s comic masterpiece A Midsummer Night’s Dream! The play, set just after an alternate universe WWI, is filled with dramatic lovers, feuding royalty, magical fairies, comical laborers, and tons of sitcom chaos. The company of 47 creative actors and talented crew, under the direction of Theatre Director Valerie Carlson and Technical Director Aileen Zeigler, is preparing a captivating performance for all ages. In addition to enjoying the rich production design and original compositions by students, make sure to keep an ear out for some of Shakespeare’s most famous lines, including "the course of true love never did run smooth” and “Lord, what fools these mortals be!”

Model UN Conference for Eighth Graders
Eighth grade students have the opportunity to be part of a St. Stephen’s and St. Agnes School delegation to the Middle School Model United Nations conference at William and Mary from Friday, February 27- Sunday, March 1.
Model UN conferences involve students acting as diplomats for a country that has been assigned to them in a simulation of the United Nations. They learn to work in committees, to write position papers, and to practice their debate and speaking skills with other students from middle schools across the region. If you’d like more information, take a look at this quick video on what a Model UN conference is about or the conference’s own website here.
SSSAS students will need to commit to doing about 4 hours of work outside of school time and seven lunch time meetings in order to attend the conference.
If your chi ld is interested, please have them fill out this Google Form by Monday, November 3. In addition, read and sign this Initial Family Permission form. The form should be emailed (lshowalter@sssas.org) or handed to Larisa Showalter in Room 5 by Monday, November 3.

To ensure the safety and comfort of all of our community members, dogs and other pets (with the exception of service animals) are not permitted on any SSSAS campus during school hours from 8:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m., Monday through Friday. Families may be allowed to walk their dogs on campus during drop-off and pick-up times, when attending explicitly pet-friendly school events (such as the annual Blessing of the Animals), and when attending athletic competitions. For everyone’s safety, all dogs must be leashed, under the control of a responsible handler at all times, and compliant with all local licensing and vaccination requirements. Owners are expected to maintain full control of their dogs and to be respectful of others’ space. Owners may not allow their dogs on turf fields and must also always clean up after their dog. Please note that failure to properly control or clean up after a dog may result in that dog being prohibited from campus. We appreciate your partnership in helping us maintain a safe and welcoming environment for our community.

Ms. Conlan has been a regular consultant in the Upper School and Middle school for many years, and she has worked across the country in independent schools. Ms. Conlan uses the best in current prevention research and her vast teaching experience to assist young people in reaching their full potential.
In addition to the student presentations, we are delighted to invite all Middle School parents to a virtual presentation on Wednesday, November 5, 2025. A zoom link will be shared closer to the date. At this meeting you will have an opportunity to learn about the course curriculum and ask questions.

SSSAS is thrilled to be hosting a FIRST Tech Challenge (FTC) event at St. Stephen's and St. Agnes Upper School Campus on January 17 and 18. We are reaching out to help recruit volunteers for this exciting day of robotics, teamwork, and STEM learning.We are reaching out in hopes that you can help by:
- Volunteering on one or both days — This link will allow you to volunteer for January 17 and this link will work for January 18 (you'll need to sign up for each day separately). Volunteers will need to complete a few quick online steps, including training and Youth Protection screening.
- Recruiting other volunteers — Please share this opportunity with friends, family, or colleagues.
- Connecting us with organizations that might be interested in supporting the event.
We’ll need over 150 volunteers across both days. No experience or technology background is required, and volunteers can choose the role that best fits their interests/skills. Students (ages 13 and over) are welcome to volunteer as well, and this will count for volunteer hours. Our events rely on dedicated volunteers to make them possible — from judging and field setup to registration and team support. Whether someone can give a few hours or the full day, their time directly helps local students grow their skills in problem-solving, innovation, and collaboration.

Parents Council of Washington presents: Parents Under Pressure: Fireside Chat with U.S. Surgeon General, Dr. Vivek Murthy

As the 19th and 21st U.S. Surgeon General, Dr. Vivek Murthy focused on critical public health issues from mental health and addiction to loneliness and violence. In 2024, he published "Parents Under Pressure: The U.S. Surgeon General's Advisory on the Mental Health and Well-Being of Parents." Parents Council of Washington (PCW) is pleased to welcome Dr. Murthy to discuss the epidemic of parental pressure and how it impacts our children and families. All PCW member school parents, administrators, faculty, and staff are invited to attend and dinner will be served. RSVP here.

In 2024, he published "Parents Under Pressure: The U.S. Surgeon General's Advisory on the Mental Health and Well-Being of Parents." Parents Council of Washington (PCW) is pleased to welcome Dr. Murthy to discuss the epidemic of parental pressure and how it impacts our children and families. October MS Chapel Collection for Meade Memorial Episcopal Church Food Pantry
Through the end of October the MS will collect food to restock the food pantry at Meade Memorial Episcopal Church (a community partner for our 8th grade religion and seminar classes). Food items needed: shelf-stable milk (boxed or powdered), fruit cups in juice, peanut butter, low sugar whole grain cereals, instant oatmeal packets, mac & cheese, rice & beans (dry or canned), low sodium canned soups, dry pasta, pasta sauce, canned tuna or chicken, instant mashed potatoes, canned vegetables. Items can be dropped off in bins in the MS front foyer!
Pumpkin Carving Party

Our opening concert features the SSSAS Community Jazz Octet under the music direction of Vaughn Ambrose, ES-12 Performing Arts Chair. This all star professional ensemble, featuring some of the metro area's most talented instrumentalists, comes together for an evening celebrating the 100th birthday of legendary saxophonist Dave Pell and his Octet.

SSSAS is thrilled to be hosting a FIRST Tech Challenge (FTC) event at St. Stephen's and St. Agnes Upper School Campus on January 17 and 18. We are reaching out to help recruit volunteers for this exciting day of robotics, teamwork, and STEM learning.
We are reaching out in hopes that you can help by:
- Volunteering on one or both days — This link will allow you to volunteer for January 17 and this link will work for January 18 (you'll need to sign up for each day separately). Volunteers will need to complete a few quick online steps, including training and Youth Protection screening.
- Recruiting other volunteers — Please share this opportunity with friends, family, or colleagues.
- Connecting us with organizations that might be interested in supporting the event.
We’ll need over 150 volunteers across both days. No experience or technology background is required, and volunteers can choose the role that best fits their interests/skills. Students (ages 13 and over) are welcome to volunteer as well, and this will count for volunteer hours.
Our events rely on dedicated volunteers to make them possible — from judging and field setup to registration and team support. Whether someone can give a few hours or the full day, their time directly helps local students grow their skills in problem-solving, innovation, and collaboration.

Parents' Discussion Group- Raising Teenagers in Faith
Chaplains Rev. Moses and Rev. Rees are gauging interest in a discussion group for parents who would like a space to talk about raising teenagers in faith using a series created by Kate Bowler called “Loving Teenagers Well.” This series combines short sections of Kate Bowler’s podcast “Everything Happens” with scripture and conversation. Each part of the series explores a different part of the parenting journey — navigating big emotions (theirs and ours), facing the fears that come with parenting, trusting in our teens’ unshakable goodness, and helping them grow through both failure and resilience. If you might be interested in being part of this discussion group, please fill out the Rising Teenagers in Faith interest form.

Health and Wellness Education:
Beginning Monday, September 15, Karen Kunz, Middle School Counselor, will meet with all seventh and eighth grade students to share important suicide prevention information. We will use the Signs of Suicide (SOS) program, which includes age-appropriate videos and discussion prompts to help students identify signs and symptoms of depression and provides training on reaching out to trusted adults when they have concerns about themselves or others. These sessions will take place during one Athletic period over the next two weeks. You can find more information about the program here. Parent Chapel Coffee
Please join us on Tuesday, September 30, at 8:00 am for an informal coffee in the Babyak Library followed by Middle School Chapel. This is an opportunity to join our worship service and engage with the Middle School team.
Steve and Aggies
The Saints Athletics Club (SAC) is seeking both parent and student volunteers to help sell concessions at Steve & Aggies during certain home games (for all teams) this year. The money raised by selling drinks, snacks and hot food contributes to SAC’s annual initiatives and directly supports the school’s athletic program, the players and coaches. Back to School Night
Please join us for this fabulous evening following the footsteps of the “day in the life” of your child’s Middle School days. On Thursday, September 11, we’ll start in the Middle School Gym at 6:00 p.m. with opening remarks, and then you’ll be off to advisory and all of your child’s classes. You will pick up your child’s schedule in the gym at the beginning of the evening.
Picture Day
School Picture Day is coming Tuesday, September 16. Pictures will be available approximately two weeks following our school's photo day. A link to save time and pre-order online will be available after picture day.

The School Store is hosting a Pop-Up on the Middle School Campus on Tuesday, September 23. The store will be open from 11:50 a.m.-12:50 p.m. Middle School students will be able to shop independently during lunch and recess. All students have charging capabilities. The school recommends that families talk with their child about their expectations regarding the use of a charge account at the school store. Students are always welcome to browse.

Our SAGE Dining Services is excited to serve our Middle School students and staff fresh meals every day. Daily menus can be previewed on their website or in the Touch of SAGE app. Additionally, menu items can be filtered by allergens and eating patterns, you can view ingredients, and rate menu items. Dismissal Procedures
Students leaving the Middle School at the end of the school day have several options for dismissal; carpool, intercampus shuttles, commuter buses, and walking. **Please note, the middle school does not utilize SchoolPass for student dismissal.
- Carpool - Students can be picked up in the middle school front circle. There is no student pick up or drop off on Braddock Road or in the adjacent tennis courts.
- Intercampus Shuttles - Students may take a complimentary shuttle to either the Upper or Lower Schools No sign up is necessary and schedules can be found on the Transportation Resource page.
- Commuter Buses - Registration is required through our Transportation Office and more information can be found on the Transportation Resource page.
- Walking - Students wishing to walk or ride a bike home, must have written consent from a parent or guardian. Please contact Patrica Liu, Dean of Students or Amie Brock, Registrar, to make these arrangements.
Please continue to use SchoolPass to indicate late arrivals and early departures.
**Shuttle Bus Pick-Up Safety Guidelines**
Shuttle Bus Drop Offs
- Please ensure your student is at the designated staging area on each campus at least 5 minutes before the scheduled bus arrival. Shuttles operate on each campus between 7:35-7:45am. Wait away from the street or bus lane and avoid letting your students play near the curb or in other unsafe areas.The pick-up locations and staging areas are:
- Lower School: Playground side of Lloyd House
- Middle School: Front Circle
- Upper School: Pick-Up in the Front Circle, Wait in the staging area under the front portico
- Guardians of students in third grade and below should wait with their students until the shuttle arrives to ensure that students safely wait for and load the buses.
- Wait for the bus to come to a complete stop before approaching.
- Form a calm, orderly line, and use the handrail when boarding.
- Follow the driver’s instructions and find a seat quickly upon boarding.
Riding the Shuttle Bus
While riding the bus, students are expected to abide by all of the school rules as stated by the respective divisions. The
following behaviors are also not allowed:
- Standing or sitting on seat backs
- Moving about the vehicle while it is in motion
- Opening windows without permission or putting any object out of windows
- Throwing any objects
- Defacing or damaging the vehicle in any way
- Occupying more than one seat
- Engaging in any physically aggressive behavior (e.g. hitting or pushing)
- Using inappropriate language
- Shouting or making excessive noise
- Eating and drinking, unless given permission by the driver
As an added safety precaution, we encourage and remind students to use seat belts when the vehicle is in motion.
Shuttle Bus Pick Up
- Wait for the bus to come to a complete stop before disembarking
- Form a calm, orderly line, and use the handrail when disembarking
- Guardians of students in third grade and below should greet their students at the shuttle stops on each campus when the shuttle buses arrive:
- Lower School: In front of Lloyd House
- Middle School: In the front circle
- Upper School: Behind the main building at the terrace area

Fun Friday Lunch
To celebrate the first Friday of the school year, we will have a Fun Lunch on Friday and a Saint Spirit Dress Down Day! There will be a cookout lunch for all students, regardless if they are on the school meal plan; however, students who would still like to bring their own lunch are welcome to do so. Wear your favorite Saints gear and all around school we will be hosting friendly games, exciting activities, and even a sweet treat. Let the FUN begin!
Saints Athletic Club Fall Social
Sept. 6: Saints Athletics Club (SAC) Fall Parent Social: Snacks & Drinks – 5:00-7:00 p.m. at US Moss Field (purchase $50 Fall Social tickets, as well as join the SAC, here). Adults only.
All parents are invited to the SAC Fall Parent Social on Saturday, September 6. Snacks, drinks, and school spirit provided! This is an excellent opportunity to learn more about the Saints Athletics Club (our school booster club) and how you can get involved.
