Junior Kindergarten

Laying the Foundation

At St. Stephen's and St. Agnes School, junior kindergarten is an intimate and unique year in which the students are celebrated for all they bring with them on this exciting journey into education. Our program is designed to develop independent and confident critical thinkers and problem-solvers who progress at their own pace through their learned skills, as well as through the engagement of their innate capabilities and interests. Our experienced and dedicated teachers strive to make their students feel comfortable and safe so they will take risks in their learning and realize that not getting something right the first time is a positive part of the process. They encourage their curiosity and introduce them to the infinite possibilities for wonder and discovery, and the joy of a lifelong desire to learn!

Our junior kindergarten students thrive in a welcoming environment in which they develop a strong sense of self and discover who they are as an individual, as a member of their class, and as a contributing citizen of the larger community — a special place where they feel safe, valued, and respected. Our mission is to lay a foundation that inspires a passion for learning, exploring, reflecting, and growing.

Parents are saying...

“Our daughter had a fantastic JK year. The program not only laid the foundation for her long-term academic success, but also broadened her horizons with great field trips, guest speakers, and special programs. She developed a passion for art and design, in which she previously showed little interest. We are delighted that she participated in so many community outreach programs that are a major emphasis at SSSAS. Finally, the JK teachers are amazing! They keep the children fully engaged and communicate frequently and effectively. We could not recommend the program more highly.”

Saints in Junior Kindergarten Become ...

Caring Citizens

Teaching citizenship skills and what it means to be positive, contributing members of a community—how we care for ourselves, each other, and the environment in relation to individuals, class, school community, and wider community.

Scientists

We strive to set up a child-centered classroom for students to feel confident, comfortable and safe to take risks in their learning, make mistakes and persevere, to be curious about the world around them, and to investigate based on these inquiries.

Readers & Writers

In addition to a print-rich environment, students explore a variety of stories in many ways. They listen to and retell stories; create their own stories collaboratively as well as individually; and explore what it means to be an author, including the art of storytelling through drawings. In group and individual explorations, students are also exposed to sound recognition and letter formation.

Dreamers

Imagination is a crucial ingredient for children of all ages. We create consistent opportunities to spark our students’ imaginations during explorations, investigations and play. Many of mankind's great achievements began as simple dreams.

Parents are saying...

"Junior kindergarten has given our son a sense of purpose and pride in his learning. The teacher has done an amazing job of giving him an appreciation for exploration and observation. He has loved every aspect of his junior kindergarten year, and we have loved watching him grow both academically and socially."

~ JK Parents Jesse & Oron Strauss

Math Lovers

We strive to foster and instill a love of math by not rushing our students to pencil and work sheets. We want our littlest Saints to be excited about numbers and achieve this through mathematical play — building, drawing, counting, exploring, and singing.

Problem Solvers

We create a wide variety of opportunities for students to think critically, practice communication skills, collaborate, and problem-solve, both independently and in groups.

Inventors

We expose students to learning and creating in and out of the classroom. We invite students to interact with and construct things in the natural world, tapping into the inventors' innate capabilities, intrinsic interests, and gross-motor needs. They gain an appreciation of the environment and the importance of sustainability through thoughtful activities and materials.

Engineers

Through a variety play-based invitations, students develop spatial skills, planning skills, the process of making mistakes and revising ideas based on our experiences, and building and constructing in a variety of complex and creative ways.

Explorers

We enhance the curriculum with excursions outside the classroom that incorporate hand-on activities through which they can explore and observe the natural world around them.

Design Thinkers

Provide experiential, hands-on, and interactive curriculum where students can plan, tinker, create, revise and design based on developed ideas to express their thinking in a variety of mediums and ways.

Speakers & Listeners

We encourage our students to wonder, question, investigate, and share their thoughts with each other. In doing this, children also practice active listening, public speaking, and developing thoughtful comments and questions for speakers.

Techies

Our JK students are introduced to technology education through iPads. Their introduction includes how to use and care for an iPad responsibly and what it means to be a good digital citizen. They work developmentally appropriate applications to deepen their digital understanding.

Best Friends

Saints forge lifelong friendships. "Two things struck me at our 50th Reunion. The genuine respect and strong bonds of friendship and caring we all still felt for each other, and the unanimous appreciation and gratitude for how the school shaped our lives, imbuing principles of honor, courage, tolerance, and inclusion in all of us."
