Saints Win 11th Annual Seminary Hill Cup!

SSSAS and Episcopal High School girls’ JV and varsity fall athletic teams compete to claim the Cup.

The 11th Annual Seminary Hill Cup between the Saints and EHS concluded on Saturday, October 20 after a week of anticipation and excitement. Spoiler alert: SAINTS WON! Founded in 2008, the Seminary Hill Cup is an annual match-up between crosstown rivals St. Stephen's and St. Agnes School and Episcopal High School. Girls’ JV and varsity fall athletic teams compete to claim the Cup.

The festivities began on Friday, October 19 as varsity captains visited the Lower School campus for the 2nd Annual Seminary Hill Cup pep rally. Captains from each athletics team introduced themselves, brought the Cup for Lower School students to see and admire, and led a trivia game about the history of the Cup and girls sports at SSSAS. Fun cheers were chanted and students waved brightly colored signed showing their Saints spirit.

All Upper School girl athletes were also invited to attend the 2nd Annual Seminary Hill Cup Dinner Celebration on Friday evening, where they joined in fellowship to hear about the history of the Seminary Hill Cup, as well as hear inspiring words from alumna Gussie Johns ‘14. Athletic Director for Girls Stephanie Koroma empowered the girls not only to compete to win, but to appreciate the experience and the joy of the relationships formed with their teammates. Girls were reminded of an age-old saying, “winning isn’t everything, but that the WILL to win is everything.” A special thank you to Gussie for joining us, and for her passionate words and perspective on the power of teams sports for women. The evening concluded with team karaoke competitions and the SHC hype video to get the girls excited for competition the next day.

Throughout its eleven-year history, competition for the Seminary Hill Cup has always been remarkably close. So close in fact, that after ten years and 99 possible competitions, the Saints and the Maroon were tied with exactly 49.5 SHC points a piece heading into Saturday’s competition. An impressive fact that speaks to the balance between two like-minded schools. The games, races, and matches on Saturday proved to be no different, with wins being tallied for both SSSAS and EHS throughout the day. The Saints cross country team started off the morning with a bang as they earned the first 2018 SHC point with a decisive win over EHS. Saints JV and varsity field hockey followed with two more wins, while the JV and varsity volleyball teams fought hard they eventually fell to EHS. With such a tight margin heading into the final contests, it came down to the two tennis matches and the varsity girls soccer game. In JV tennis, the match was tied 3-3 with only the #2 singles match left to decide the outcome. Sophomore Katie Patrick ended up winning in a tiebreak to secure the 2018 JV tennis SHC point for the Saints. The varsity girls soccer game proved to be another incredibly close competition, ending in the fourth 0-0 tie in the past four years. The varsity tennis team battled in their matches but fell to a strong EHS team. At the end of the day, the Saints were victorious with a 4.5-3.5 win to secure the 2018 Seminary Hill Cup Championship!
