INNOVATION IN EDUCATION AWARD
Richard Rho, SSSAS Director of Technology Education and Innovation, wins award from VAIS.
Congratulations to St. Stephen's & St. Agnes Director of Technology Education and Innovation Richard Rho for winning a Virginia Association of Independent Schools (VAIS) Innovation in Education Award! The award recognizes teachers who are globally minded and encourage students to think beyond boundaries. He was recognized at the VAIS Leading Learning Conference in Richmond on October 14 with an engraved, crystal apple along with a monetary prize. Three teachers were chosen in Virginia for the award, one from each division (Lower, Middle, and Upper).
With the theme of the VAIS conference, “Seeding the Future, Growing Through Failure,” the 2016 Innovation in Education Awards focused on educators who had demonstrated growth through failure in some aspect of their professional lives. Entrants had to demonstrate one of the following: turned student failure into success; sparked a passion for learning; helped support a student/colleague in crisis; or, embraced a new teaching methodology to promote student success.
Rho was chosen for the Upper School award because he inspired and encouraged his 3D Modeling and Entrepreneurship students to such an extent that they embraced a team effort of designing a functional prosthetic hand for their final project. It was a fascinating journey through teamwork, both the failures and successes. “My students are learning that innovation takes resilience, persistence, and optimism, to create something worth waiting for. Failure is no longer seen as failure, but as an opportunity to make it better," said Rho.
