Self-Portrait Study

A Middle School art project is now a professionally framed art installation at the Middle School.

Last spring Middle School Art Teachers Victoria Calabrese and Tom Bunnell led the eighth-grade students in a self-portrait study. After taking a series of photographs intended to capture the essence of the kids, the students created striking self-portraits in materials of their choosing. Fifteen of these portraits are now professionally framed in an installation in the Middle School Admission Office.

“Each portrait captures a likeness of the artist-- in appearance and personality,” said Visual Arts Department Chair Kate Elkins. “They are beautifully executed, and moving to see all together as one exhibit! A parent shared her son’s portrait with me and said this is why she loves SSSAS--that students who might only identify as an athlete, or as a theater kid, discover parts of themselves that they didn’t know existed. In her case, this happened in the art room creating this self-portrait!”
