Creative writing students met with poet Mandy Sutter across the globe. See video of the chat.
Students in Dr. Roberta Klein’s Creative Writing senior elective course utilized technology to chat with English poet Mandy Sutter, who visited the classroom from the comfort of her home in Ilkey, England. The visit was made possible using Skype, a software application that allows users to make live, interactive video calls over the Internet. Ms. Sutter’s Skype visit was connected to a large screen in the Upper School computer lab so the entire class could see her clearly. During the chat, Ms. Sutter read several of her original poems and answered questions from the class about writing and her life. She also critiqued some the students’ poetry, which was sent to her prior to the Skype chat.
Dr. Klein has participated in several summer poetry workshops led by Ms. Sutter in the north of England. In 2006, Ms. Sutter was the SSSAS poet in residence, a longtime Saints tradition where a poet visits with sophomore English classes for a week. Ms. Sutter taught creative writing for ten years at the University of Leeds and has been a freelance writer for more than 20 years. She has published several short stories and poetry collections as well as a novel titled, Keeping Mum.
