Meet Julian: Ninth Grade

A Saint Since Ninth Grade

Q&A with Julian

List of 8 items.

  • What is your favorite subject?

I’ve grown fond of Mandarin & Chinese Culture this year. It is exciting to learn a new language, and it is still a fresh experience (having not learned a foreign language before).
  • What was one of your favorite assignments?

In math we had to create a website on any random math topic in Geometry. The independence that came with creating the project made it all the more fun to see how my own work came to fruition.
  • What have you learned about yourself through your academic work?

I’ve learned that I can manage quite a bit more work than I previously thought possible.
  • What artistic endeavors have you pursued?

I have been heavily involved in the band groups this year (jazz combo, chorus assistance, pit orchestra) and have discovered that I know a lot more than I previously believed about music. Having played the bass for six years, I still only ever utilized a small portion of my knowledge. SSSAS has guided me towards actually exploring the extent of my skills.
  • Which athletic experience have you enjoyed?

This year I participated in football, track, and basketball. Basketball has been my favorite experience this year not only because it is my favorite sport, but also because I feel that the team we had maintained a great work ethic and chemistry. I have learned that my desire to help others be the best they can be is just as great as my desire to be great myself.
  • Is there a club you have enjoyed?

I joined the morning weightlifting club (the Breakfast Club) this year. This club has made me stronger both physically and mentally due to how early I must wake up to get there on time (5:30 a.m.). The club has forced me to manage my time better.
  • What do you think makes SSSAS special?

Unlike other schools, SSSAS has all three campuses frequently interact with each other. The Lower School and Middle School students visit the Upper School campus almost daily.
  • What part of the school's mission speaks to you?

I believe that knowledge must be used for the better in order to get the most value out of it, and the statement “to pursue goodness as well as knowledge” really emphasizes that same idea.

At SSSAS I have learned that I value the independence that music gives me. I had the pleasure of assisting the Middle School Chorus in their last concert of the year, and I wrote my own music for it. That experience, by far, was my favorite of the year.
